A Letter to Janesville

A Letter to Janesville

Dear Janesville,As another year comes to a close, we wanted to take a moment to pause, not to rank posts, count views, or recap viral moments, but simply to say thank you.Janesville Buzz exists because of you.It exists because of the messages sent at midnight when something exciting happens in town. Because of the comments that spark conversation. Because of the photos shared, the stories tipped in, the local pride shown loud and clear. Even when opinions differ.2025 reminded us of something important: Janesville cares. Deeply. We saw it in the way this community showed up for local businesses, old favorites and brand-new ventures alike. We saw it in packed events, sold-out fundraisers, full patios, Friday night lights, and weekends spent downtown. We saw it in neighbors supporting neighbors, rallying around causes, and stepping up when it mattered most. Not every moment was easy. Like any community, we had our challenges. There were tough conversations, strong opinions, and moments that asked us to listen a little harder and show a little more grace. And through it all, one thing remained clear: people here are invested. They want Janesville to thrive. That passion is what fuels Janesville Buzz.We don’t take lightly the role we play in sharing what’s happening around town. We’re grateful for the trust, the engagement, the accountability... and yes, even the reminders when we miss something or need to do better. This platform is shaped by the people who interact with it every single day.To the small business owners chasing big dreams, the volunteers giving their time, the creatives, the coaches, the educators, the city workers, the organizers, and the everyday folks who make this city feel like home... thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. Your stories matter, and we’re honored to help share them.As we head into a new year, our hope is simple: more connection, more support for one another, and more moments that remind us why we’re proud to call Janesville home.Thank you for another year of Buzz. Here’s to what’s next...With love & gratitude,EmilyJanesville Buzz

Why Shopping & Eating Local Matters More Than Ever This Holiday Season

Why Shopping & Eating Local Matters More Than Ever This Holiday Season

The holiday season in Janesville have a special kind of magic. It’s in the glow of downtown lights, the familiar faces behind the counter, and the local spots that feel like home year-round. As the season of giving ramps up, there’s one simple choice that can make a powerful difference right here in our community: choosing to shop local and eat local. When you support locally owned businesses and restaurants, you’re doing more than crossing names off your gift list or grabbing a meal. You’re investing in neighbors, families, jobs, and the future of Janesville. And the best part? Supporting local doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. There’s a way for everyone to buy in.Why Local Matters (Especially During the Holidays)Local businesses are the heartbeat of Janesville. They sponsor youth sports teams, donate to community fundraisers, create jobs, and keep our downtowns vibrant. Dollars spent locally are more likely to stay local, circulating back into schools, nonprofits, and other small businesses. The holiday season is one of the most important times of year for small businesses and restaurants. A few intentional choices now can help ensure your favorite spots are still here next year and stay thriving.Easy Ways to Shop Local at Every Budget🎁 Under $10Grab a locally roasted coffee, baked good, or sweet treatPick up stickers, candles, or small handmade items from local shopsBuy a drink or appetizer at a locally owned restaurantSkip one big-box impulse buy and pop into a local shop instead, you might be surprised what you find.🎁 $10–$25Purchase gift cards to local restaurants, coffee shops, salons, or boutiquesShop small for stocking stuffers, ornaments, or holiday décorSupport local makers at pop-ups and marketsAdd one local gift card to every holiday list, it’s a guaranteed win.🎁 $25–$50+Book a local experience: dinner, brunch, hair services, or wellness appointmentsShop boutiques for unique clothing, accessories, or home goodsOrder catering trays or desserts from local restaurants for holiday gatheringsMake your next gift an experience, it would support a local business and create lasting memories.Choosing Local When Dining Out (or Staying In)Eating local is one of the easiest (and most delicious) ways to support the community.Dine out at locally owned restaurants instead of chainsOrder takeout or delivery from a local spot during busy weeksHost holiday meals catered by local restaurantsMeet friends for coffee, lunch, or happy hour at neighborhood favoritesChallenge yourself to make at least one local meal choice this season, it adds up fast. It’s Not About Perfection. It’s About IntentionSupporting local doesn’t mean only shopping small or never stepping into a big store. It’s about making intentional choices when you can. One coffee. One meal. One gift. One post sharing a local business you love. Those small actions create real impact. The Ripple Effect of Shopping & Eating LocalWhen you support local businesses:You help create and sustain local jobsYou strengthen Janesville’s economyYou keep our community unique and vibrantYou build connections that go beyond transactionsThis holiday season, let’s keep Janesville buzzing. Not just online, but in our neighborhoods, storefronts, and restaurants. And that's the Buzz!

Food Review: Whiskey Ranch in Downtown Janesville

Food Review: Whiskey Ranch in Downtown Janesville

The first time I tried the new smash burgers at Whiskey Ranch Janesville, it was one of those perfect lunchtime decisions that makes you wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. I stopped in for a delicious lunch and ordered one of their highly recommended smash burgers. You can choose a single or a double, but after one look... I knew I had to go big. What hit me first was the flavor. These patties aren’t your run-of-the-mill ground beef. Whiskey Ranch uses a custom blend of USDA Black Angus choice chuck, sirloin, and skirt whole muscle steak. A custom blend crafted exclusively for them. You can taste that difference immediately. Every bite is rich, juicy, and full of that deep, steak-like flavor that makes you stop mid-conversation and say, “Okay, this is really good.”Then there’s everything piled on top. Shredded lettuce for crunch, pickles for tang, caramelized onions for that sweet, savory melt, and their house burger sauce that ties it all together. It comes stacked between a golden bun with those irresistible crispy edges, the kind that crackle just enough when you bite in. Honestly, it felt like the kind of burger you remember days later. Truthfully, I'm already planning my next lunch at Whiskey Ranch Janesville just for the burger. And if you enjoy spending your Sundays out and about in Janesville, here’s the real treat: their Double Smash Burgers are just $10 all day and it comes with your choice of side. Double the patties, double the excuse to come back. Once you’ve had one, you'll be hooked!

Food Review: So Chopped at Bodacious

Food Review: So Chopped at Bodacious

Tucked inside the Bodacious Block of 42, you’ll find three distinct shops that together create one of Janesville’s most charming culinary hubs. Among them is So Chopped, a newer cafe serving up fresh, vibrant, and customizable meals. From signature salads and wraps to build-your-own creations, paninis, a quesadilla of the week, and a rotating soup of the day. So Chopped is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., it’s the perfect midday stop for something delicious, fast, and thoughtfully crafted. In true Bodacious fashion, everything here reflects a commitment to local ingredients and community-inspired flavor.Today’s visit brought two standout dishes to the table. First up was the Roasted Turkey Fontina Focaccia, a towering sandwich creation that hits all the right notes and served with kettle potato chips and a pickle spear. The combination of tender turkey breast with blackberry & orange jam delivers a sweet-tart brightness that pairs beautifully with the smoky applewood bacon. Peppery arugula and crispy onions add texture and balance, while the Bodacious maple balsamic ties everything together with a warm, slightly sweet finish. All of this is served on a soft, flavorful focaccia roll that makes every bite feel like a little Thanksgiving inspired celebration. The second dish, was the Twisted Sesame Signature Salad. A fresh, colorful standout packed with flavor and crunch. Built on a bed of spring mix, it’s topped with mandarin oranges, edamame, carrots, mushrooms (which I swapped for extra oranges), sliced almonds, crispy wonton strips, pea pods, and a sesame ginger vinaigrette that brings a bright, zesty kick. It’s the kind of salad that leaves you feeling satisfied rather than weighed down. Deliciously balanced, hearty, and full of texture. The extra pop of citrus from the added oranges made it even more refreshing. What makes this experience even more special is the ethos behind Bodacious Shops. As their website puts it, they aim to be “a culinary and cultural beacon” in the heart of Janesville. One that celebrates local ingredients and blends Midwestern warmth with modern culinary excellence. Every dish feels like a reflection of that mission. Whether you're grabbing a quick lunch, meeting a friend, or simply exploring Janesville’s food scene, So Chopped offers a modern, flavorful place where community and craftsmanship come together deliciously.
