Last week, I joined my boss, Jake, for the hibachi lunch at Fuji Steakhouse on Milton Avenue in Janesville. We went in right at the tail end of lunch service - the place was mellow and comfortably lit with soft ambiance, beautiful water features, and vibrant fish tanks framing the hibachi tables.The Hibachi ShowOur chef arrived with flair, cracking jokes, flipping spatulas, and even launching an impressive onion volcano that burst into flame right before our eyes. He was talkative, personable—and clearly skilled. He playfully tossed a spoonful of rice into Jake’s mouth, and he stuck the landing!What We AteWe both ordered the hibachi lunch combo—I chose chicken, Jake opted for shrimp. Dinner included fried rice, generously coated in thick, tangy sauces, seasoned vegetables, and our grilled meat of choice, juicy and flavorful!The portions were huge. I had more than half my meal left to take home—great value at about $13–14 for lunch specials. The meal was hearty, savory, and comfortingly flavorful.Starter & ServiceWe began with hearty house salads that came with sweet, creamy dressing—simple, but undeniably tasty. The service was attentive and fast, and the chef stayed engaging from start to finish.Atmosphere & ValueFuji’s sizable parking lot makes arrival easy. The low‑lighting by the hibachi grill sets a relaxed mood, with the water features adding a calming backdrop. Janesville Tourism Shatters Records Again, Fueling Local Growth and Community PrideFor the third year in a row, tourism in Janesville is on a record-breaking streak, and the numbers from 2024 are in—they’re nothing short of incredible. The Janesville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (JACVB) has announced that visitor spending and total economic impact have reached all-time highs, firmly establishing Janesville as a rising star in Wisconsin’s tourism landscape.According to newly released data, visitors spent $170.2 million in Janesville in 2024, a $6 million increase from the year prior. When indirect and induced economic impacts are factored in, that total jumps to an impressive $260.1 million. To put that in perspective: Janesville welcomed an average of $466,000 in visitor spending every single day last year.But the impact goes well beyond dollars. This surge in tourism supported 1,178 local jobs and generated $14.5 million in state and local tax revenue. Without that revenue, each Janesville household would need to contribute an extra $518 in taxes to make up the difference.“Tourism continues to play a vital role in our local economy—not only supporting jobs and small businesses, but also enhancing quality of life for our residents,” said Christine Rebout, Executive Director of the JACVB. “With exciting developments on the horizon, we’re confident Janesville will continue to grow as a year-round destination.”Big Developments Fueling the MomentumJanesville's recent growth in tourism isn’t just a happy accident—it’s the result of deliberate investment in attractions, facilities, and community events.One of the most anticipated projects, the Woodman’s Sports & Convention Center, is scheduled to open this fall. Families in Janesville will soon have a new option for high-quality child care as YWCA Rock County prepares to open its Early Learning Center for 2- and 3-year-olds on June 30, 2025. Located at 1735 S. Washington Street, the center is designed to meet a growing need for affordable, full-day care for working families with toddlers.This new program reflects YWCA Rock County’s broader mission to empower families, support early childhood development, and foster equity in access to education. The center will be open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., offering a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for young children to learn and thrive.“We know child care is one of the biggest challenges facing working families,” said Heidi Deininger, Executive Director of YWCA Rock County. “This center gives parents peace of mind knowing their children are in a caring, enriching space that supports their early development.”With a play-based curriculum, literacy-focused activities, and attention to children’s social and emotional growth, the center promises to give kids a strong start during their most formative years. Exciting changes are underway for the Boys & Girls Club of Janesville as construction on its long-awaited new facility officially begins. With the first stages of building already in progress, the Club is looking ahead to a grand opening in September 2026—a milestone that will mark a major leap forward for local youth programming.The groundbreaking ceremony, held recently at 925 South Jackson Street, drew an enthusiastic crowd of about 200 community members, donors, and leaders. The celebration was highlighted by remarks from Wisconsin Department of Administration Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld, Club CEO Rebecca Veium, Board President, and even a current Club member—each sharing how this project represents far more than a new building. This isn’t just about bricks and beams—it’s about building opportunity, hope, and a brighter future for young people in Rock County.Once complete, the new facility will triple the number of youth ages 6–18 that the Club can serve each year. That means expanded access to academic support, enrichment programs, mentorship, and safe spaces for kids and teens who need it most.The project is ambitious, and fundraising efforts are still underway. Children’s Museum of Rock County Gives Green Light to JP Cullen to Begin ConstructionIt’s official: construction is about to begin on one of the most anticipated community projects in Rock County. The Children’s Museum of Rock County (CMRC) announced today that it has given the green light to JP Cullen to begin construction on its future home in downtown Janesville.The CMRC Board of Directors has voted to move forward with the building phase, instructing JP Cullen to begin work shortly after June 23, 2025. This milestone marks a significant leap forward for the museum’s vision, just days after hiring new executive director Kent Anderson and launching a $500,000 Transform Tomorrow matching campaign.Executive Director Kent Anderson“We know this is the news everyone has been waiting for,” said John Westphal, President of the CMRC Board. “Our board recognized we had a fiscal responsibility to our donors and we have been waiting until we felt we had met those obligations before giving Cullen the okay. When the numbers came in last week, we had the confidence that now is the time.”$14.5 Million Vision Becoming RealityWith the most recent bids now finalized, the Board felt confident the timing was right to start the next chapter.
